                                          Why You Should Care

A Public Health Issue

  • Lupus is widespread, affects 1.5 million Americans
  • Lack of awareness, knowledge, diagnosis, safe and effective treatments

A Women’s Issue

  • 90% affected are women - mostly in childbearing years, ages 15-44
  • A leading cause of kidney disease, premature cardiovascular disease, heart attack and stroke among young women

A Racial Disparities Issue

  • Black, Hispanic, and Asian women experience two to three times the incidence, more serious complications and higher mortality than Caucasians

A Research Issue

  • To date: No known cause of cure
  • Only one new treatment approved in over 50 years
The person who says something is impossible should not interrupt the person who is doing it.
