- Lupus is widespread, affects 1.5 million Americans
- Lack of awareness, knowledge, diagnosis, safe and effective treatments
A Women’s Issue
- 90% affected are women - mostly in childbearing years, ages 15-44
- A leading cause of kidney disease, premature cardiovascular disease, heart attack and stroke among young women
A Racial Disparities Issue
- Black, Hispanic, and Asian women experience two to three times the incidence, more serious complications and higher mortality than Caucasians
A Research Issue
- To date: No known cause of cure
- Only one new treatment approved in over 50 years
